BU’s Thriving Arts Scene The culture that is cultivated at Bishop’s University is one which values both freedom and variety throughout the stu- dent experience; one of the most prominent aspects of stu- dent life is the ever-flourishing BU arts scene. We have a vast selection of music, theatre, visual arts, and multimedia show- cases, resulting in a seemingly unending opportunity to enjoy students’ work as they continue to hone their craft at BU.

DRAMA BU is well known in the Estrie re- gion for its productions - plays of a remarkable calibre put on by the BU Drama Department being only the tip of the iceberg. They also play host to the New Plays and TheatreActive festivals, which fea- ture shows directed, written, and performed by students. In other news, the BU Musical Theatre con- centration is off icially in full swing, meaning epic main-stage musical productions for you to enjoy. department is also home to the Musique Chez Nous concert series which features professional artists performing with free admission for students! The BU Singers Choir also puts on two yearly concerts dedicated to highlighting the voices of BU and our surrounding community. MUSIC Nearest and dearest to me (as it is my primary fi eld of study) is the BU Music Department. Students are invited to participate in — be it as players or audience members — ensemble concerts, open mic nights, and biweekly jam sessions hosted by the BU Music Society. These shows feature students performing a variety of musical genres and, as if this wasn’t exciting enough, the

FINE ARTS The Fine Arts Department is widely recognized for their much-antici- pated open houses at the end of each semester which showcase student works from the term. A wonderful insight to the inner workings of the program as well as an opportunity for students to explore the curative process of building a catalogue and transi- tioning their work from a private studio to a professional gallery setting. Similarly, the Grad Arts Show showcases the work of graduating students who strive to enhance their pr ofi le and bring national attention to their work.

FILM The BU Film Festival (BUFF) is a competition celebrating the creativity of student-made short fi lms which are, of course, written, directed, acted, and fi lmed by students from any department! The submitted films are shown at a gala event in March and can subsequently be sent to national fil m festivals and grant submission committees; not to mention it’s the perfect excuse to take a break from studying and have a movie night out with your peers!
