The Sweet Side of BU

All my life, I have loved baking cookies for the delicious treat but also for the experience. My journey at Bishop’s has been a bit like baking. Preheat the oven I came to campus a week early as part of a program called ASAP (now called the BU Arch- way Program). Throughout this program, I met many interesting people, who I am still friends with, as well as professors and faculty who helped me discover all the great resources on campus. Mix your dry ingredients There is nothing like getting involved academically to gain valuable experi- ences. I’ve taken courses outside of my program and de fi nitely my comfort zone like an acting course in the drama program. I never would have considered myself a pro fi cient actor, but the course really helped build my con fi dence, improve my speaking skills, and, in the words of Shakespeare, make the world my stage! Cream your butter and sugars Building your own family among the Bishop’s community through clubs and social activities is the best part of the BU experi- ence. I’ve done just about everything from being elect- ed First-Year Representative on the Student Represent- ative Council to forming my own club about American Sign Language. Clubs have been my favorite way to meet other students who share my interests as well as to develop new interests. Add eggs one at a time University is all about pre- paring you for your future career, and some of the most insightful opportunities in this area have been my two summer internships! I have worked for an art museum and for government, showing me two di ff erent sectors that have helped me decide my career path and gain valuable workplace skills. Mix bowls together and add chocolate chips The chocolate on top has been the variety of events put on by the university. I’ve seen incredible speakers like Jane Goodall at the Donald Lecture series; I’ve marched through the streets during Take Back the Night; and I’ve danced in the snowy quad at Winterfest. There’s nothing like getting out of your comfort zone and par- ticipating in some of the many events o ff ered. Bake for 9 to 12 minutes While all the events, activities, and academic opportunities have made my experience at Bishop’s incredible, I have really relished in the moments in between, whether that be hanging out at home with my roommates or joining intramural sports at the Plex. Bishop’s is unique in how it makes you feel as part of a community, and you get that every day here. Enjoy! Time fli es when you’re having fun. It’s easy to get caught in the whirlwind of classes, clubs, events, and more while you’re a student here, so don’t forget to stop and take a second to breathe it in. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity where I’ve discovered more about myself and my place in this world. My advice to make the most of BU is don’t be afraid to try something new, have fun, and maybe eat a few cookies at Dewies!
