Be You @ BU Fall 2022 Magazine

My name is Taylynn and I grew up in a military family. I have moved from coast to coast and have never really had a hometown. I previ- ously studied almost exclusively in French and choosing Bishop’s, an English University, has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I love the size of the campus and the small classes, as well as the newly renovated laboratories, sports complex, and library − all things I now use frequently. Everyone has ups and downs at university and Bishop’s o ff ers lots of helpful student services that are EASY to access. One resource students sometimes overlook is their faculty. They understand that it is hard to transition from high school to post-secondary education and are quite willing to o ff er their support. I might be biased as a Chem Major, but the chemistry faculty is by far my favourite. There are not many chemistry students so the teacher-student ratio is INCREDIBLE. The profs and TA’s all know who you are, want you to succeed, and look for any way to help you. For example, in my second year, the Chair of my department, our lab technician, and two chemistry master’s students taught me a topic that I was not understanding. In my third year, the Chair of my department reached out to a colleague to help me get the honours project I wanted. In my fourth year, I was approached to be a teaching assistant for labs. All of this was because my professors know who I am, they understand what I want and need, they believe in me and they know that I plan to accomplish great things. I could go on for days about why Bishop’s is such a good choice, but one thing that really sticks out is student life. There is always something to do whether it be watching rugby, going to trivia night on campus, or Dewie’s chicken nugget night. There are also a variety of clubs to join. Throughout my time at Bishop’s, I have been a part of the SafeWalk program and the Women’s Competitive Volleyball team. In my fi nal year, I became a co-lead of the team, and now I run half of the finances, all vol - unteering and fundraising, and some external a ff airs. I have also been a member of the Chemistry Society for four years and am now a co-lead of that as well. Having a life outside of academics is important and Bishop’s knows that. After four years at Bishop’s, all I can say is that without this school, its community, the faculty, the opportunities I was o ff ered, and my peers, I would not be the woman I am today. I en courage all future Gaiters to not be afraid of the unknown, to reach out when you need help, to ask questions, and to try di ff erent clubs and courses. At Bishop’s you will never be just a number to anyone, you will BU.
